> May 2023
> Welcome to the May WorldFAIR Newsletter! In this issue we spotlight our work on Urban Health, we provide updates on our webinar series and look back at the first 12 months of WorldFAIR!
> WorldFAIR at a Glance
> The WorldFAIR project launched in June 2022, and it has now been active for a year. It works with a set of 11 disciplinary and cross-disciplinary case studies to advance implementation of the FAIR principles and, in particular, to improve interoperability and reusability of digital research objects, including data.
>
> Our monthly newsletters provide summaries of all our activities - if you missed the previous editions, you can catch up on the WorldFAIR Newsletter archive <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=e78a3522c7&e=5ee5d09511>.
>
> The project has launched a new webinar series: The WorldFAIR Project: Presenting Project Outputs; event dates and information on how to register can be found on the WorldFAIR website <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=0e01b60748&e=5ee5d09511>.
>
>
> Case Study Focus
>
> Each month we focus on the activities of one of the eleven WorldFAIR case studies <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=1ffefdd046&e=5ee5d09511>. This month we take a closer look into Work Package 8: Urban Health <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=f5a2a2b059&e=5ee5d09511>.

> Work Package 8 partners: Salud Urbana en América Latina (SALURBAL) - Urban Health in Latin America <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=8c35cf7249&e=5ee5d09511>,
>
> Cities are considered the primary contributors to global environmental change and human development, being at the centre of leading mitigation and adaptation strategies that could promote human health along with environmental sustainability. Given the transdisciplinary approach of Urban Health, challenges faced within this field are also common to other areas and consequently, solutions proposed from the Urban Health perspective could also promote advancement beyond its discipline.
>
> The SALURBAL project <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=520f6b4cc5&e=5ee5d09511> (Urban Health for Latin American cities) is a five-year project based at the Urban Health Collaborative, Drexel University, and with partners throughout Latin America and in the United States that studies how urban environments and urban policies impact the health of residents from almost 370 cities in 11 Latin American countries. To pursue this goal, the SALURBAL project 1) has systematized a process for city definition and operationalization that integrates multiple ways in which a city can be delimited; 2) has created a data structure that allowed the incorporation of data from different sources, making it shareable across several cores and disciplines; and 3) has developed procedures and standards that systematically documented issues related to data access, quality, and completeness during the process of data harmonization.
>
> WP8 published their first deliverable in May 2023, 'Urban Health Data – Guidelines and Recommendations (Deliverable 8.1) <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=a783bd4b00&e=5ee5d09511>'. This report assessed the implementation of FAIR principles within the Urban Health field through two case studies, subsequently focusing on the data collection and harmonisation process of health survey data.
>
> Alongside WP7, the Case Study on Urban Health will present their work on 18 October 2023, 12:00 UTC in an event part of the WorldFAIR webinar series promoting project outputs. You can find out more about the webinar, including how to register, on the WorldFAIR website <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=f2dffe8467&e=5ee5d09511>.
> Highlights of the Month
> Each month we bring to you a selection of the latest project activities.
> Opening Session to the WorldFAIR Project webinar series: the recording is now available
> The WorldFAIR Project launched a webinar series aiming to promote and discuss all published and upcoming deliverables. The opening session, organised by WP14, took place on the 26th of May. The webinar placed the project in the international and global landscape, and featured Simon Hodson (CODATA, WorldFAIR Project Coordinator), Hilary Hanahoe (RDA Secretary General), Javier López Albacete (Policy Officer, EC), Ari Asmi (Director, RDA Association AISBL) and Alex Delipalta (RDA Association AISBL Communications and Engagement Officer). The recording and presenations are available on the WorldFAIR Project website <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=41a8f428eb&e=5ee5d09511>.
>
> What is digital IUPAC? Tools for an increasingly digital research culture
> WP3 hosted a conversation among experts in the chemical data management field with younger chemists about managing and sharing research data in the cloud (or “as digital data”), Standards, identifiers, and metadata in a FAIR world, and Emerging resources to help manage/clean/prep/check your data. The recording and presentation materials are available on the WorldFAIR website <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=9e9a2de9cc&e=5ee5d09511>.
>
> Introducing the WorldFAIR Cultural Heritage Image Sharing Working Group
> The DRI has an expert panel of contributors thinking about the issues underlying potential approaches to better FAIR alignment for the GLAMs. The WG reviewed WP13’s first deliverable D13.1 Cultural Heritage Mapping Report: Practices and policies supporting Cultural Heritage image sharing platforms <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=86940190ab&e=5ee5d09511> and, shortly thereafter, began considering responses to a number of themes that came out of that report. Read the full blog <https://worldfair-project.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=232d062cde2fc6e2aae0c242c&id=29de4926db&e=5ee5d09511> by Beth Knazook, DRI (WP13 Lead).
