Dear Colleagues,

(Apologies for multiple postings.)

According to the AGU website, 'AGU Fall Meeting 2020 will be mostly virtual
and remains the global convening meeting for the Earth and space sciences
community. Featured meeting content will be held during the original 7–11
December dates, with additional content scheduled to best meet the needs of
our international attendees around the world.'

The World Data System of the International Science Council is co-convening
the below two sessions, and we would like to encourage your abstract
submission by the deadline of *23:59 ET on Wednesday, 29 July*.

Many thanks,

*Session ID:* 102356
*Session Title:* IN005 – Advancing Opportunities for Current and Future
Users of Earth and Space Science Data
*Section/Focus Group:* Earth and Space Science Informatics

   - *Submit your abstract to this session (102356)*

*Session Description:*
Long-term preservation, curation, and dissemination of scientific data and
related outputs are vital to ensure they can be reused by researchers, both
today and into the future. The evolution of information and communications
technology (ICT) in recent decades has facilitated improvements in science
infrastructure, as well as in practices for preparing and managing data for
potential reuse beyond the original data collection team, enabling
transdisciplinary research, data integration, policy-development and
decision-making. Data repositories, data centers, archives, and others have
leveraged such improvements in ICT to meet challenges for creating systems
that attain the Transparency, Responsibility, User Focus, Sustainability,
and Technology (TRUST) demanded by their stakeholders and to offer
capabilities for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR)
data. This session offers presentations on how the research community is
meeting the challenges for both TRUST and FAIR, and thus improving
opportunities for current and long-term reuse of Earth and space science

*Primary Convener:*

   - Robert Downs, Columbia University of New York, Center for
International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), Palisades NY

   - Rorie Edmunds, World Data System of the International Science Council
   - H. K. Ramapriyan (Rama), Science Systems and Applications, Inc. and
   NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

*Session ID:* 104192
*Session Title:* IN040 – The Importance of Trustworthy Digital Repositories
for Open Data in Developing Countries
*Section/Focus Group:* Earth and Space Science Informatics

   - *Submit your abstract to this session (104192)

*Session Description:*
Developed countries have seen a marked acceleration in scientific advances
in part due to robust data infrastructure and disciplinary data
repositories. Unfortunately, many developing countries have been slow to
adopt open data policies and practices, and many data sets either remain
inaccessible (and at risk of loss) on researcher's computers or require a
personal approach to government agency staff to obtain. Development
partners and researchers from the Global North often expatriate data
because host governments lack policies and infrastructure for data
archiving. This session seeks to learn from experiences of international
data groups (e.g., WDS, CODATA, RDA) seeking to develop data infrastructure
that adheres to FAIR data principles. It is also open to any organization
that is working to build indigenous capacity for data management,
dissemination, and preservation in the Global South. We particularly
welcome representatives of developing country repositories who wish to
share their experiences.

*Primary Convener:*

   - Alex M de Sherbinin (WDS-SC Chair), Center for International Earth
   Science Information Network

   - Rorie Edmunds, World Data System of the International Science Council
   - Paul Bartel, AGRHYMET Regional Center

*Expressions of Interest to Host the WDS-IPO:* NEW DEADLINE 31 JULY
