<p>Hi All,</p>
<p>Totally agree. You cannot imagine how much we were, and are
still, "attacked", to launch the Crystallography Open Database in
2003. We are now the top fully free open database in the world.
Lets construct a fully opened library and periodicals collection,
entirely on academics time since we anyway give our time out to
publishers.</p>

<div>I agree with Hilda, if it is indeed the UN year of Open
Science,' I do hope it will take us ALL the way. No room now
for half measures. Scientific knowledge must be open with NO
exchange of money necessary at ANY stage or between any
persons or entities of publishing. The argument that open
access publishing cycle still needs money is now passe. How
much it takes to publish one volume of a journal , in the
electronic form? How much income it generates for the
publisher? Is there a study? I read in an article that
publishing industries' profits are comparable and even in a
case surpassed the profits of a big (popular manufacturing)
corporate! So let's not buy that argument anymore. Atleast
those of us who are really committed to open science.</div>

reviewed, evaluated, consumed, reused, and more knowledge
contributed again by researchers, why should there be an
exchange of money for access to knowledge, all in the name of
'expenses incurred for publishing '? The global south cannot
comprehend why the hefty APCs or afford to pay APCs. We do not
want the benevolence of waiver either. How many waivers can be
given anyway? </div>

this year and atleast by the end of it we truly realise 'Open
Science' without having to nuance the definition of what is
'open'. Let Science be as open as the air around us. ( Clean
