To subscribers to the CODATA International list, greetings;<br>
 <br>
The message below from Anita Dewaard has caused a number of people to write to me to express concerns and request clarification about the relationship of CODATA to the initiative described.<br>
 <br>
<b>I would like to take this opportunity, therefore, to clarify the nature of the CODATA International list and remind readers that the appearance of a third party post on this list does not necessary imply endorsement by CODATA.<br>
</b> <br>
The CODATA International list has over 3000 subscribers from around the world.  It serves three functions:<br>
<br>
1) For CODATA to announce its activities, events, outputs to that community (e.g. recent announcements of the <a href="https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__codata.org_call-2Dfor-2Dsessions-2Dposters-2Dand-2Dlightning-2Dtalks-2Dinternational-2Dfair-2Dconvergence-2Dsymposium-2D2020-2Ddeadline-2D20-2Djuly-2D2020_&d=DwMGaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=n9HCCtgqDPssu5vpqjbO3q4h2g6vMeTOp0Ez7NsdVFM&m=ReGiog8K-oTw8oXyBjbfC7d_ajby7ggTZSbZZJuzekQ&s=Ok_anl2ozt_BZAi8BTmK7jSyRk5WrOVFb7CulPJmUHM&e=" style="color:blue;text-decoration:underline" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">FAIR

2) For third parties to do the same (a number of organisations and projects use the list regularly for this, including DDI, the GEO, geospatial and AGU communities and so on).<br>
3) For discussion threads of particular issues (for example the discussion that led to the <a href="https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__codata.org_open-2Dscience-2Dfor-2Da-2Dglobal-2Dtransformation-2Dcodata-2Dcoordinated-2Dsubmission-2Dto-2Dthe-2Dunesco-2Dopen-2Dscience-2Dconsultation_&d=DwMGaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=n9HCCtgqDPssu5vpqjbO3q4h2g6vMeTOp0Ez7NsdVFM&m=ReGiog8K-oTw8oXyBjbfC7d_ajby7ggTZSbZZJuzekQ&s=-FsI-Y57c4p2UYNtG-akr4gAnJ70uK-z2nI_d2pNcWg&e=" style="color:blue;text-decoration:underline" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">UNESCO
 submission</a> or recent discussions of data feudalism).<br>
<br>
The message from Anita is an instance of function 2.<br>
<br>
The CODATA International list is moderated.  However, that simply means that someone from the CODATA Secretariat (generally Asha or myself) checks the post to filter out spam before allowing it through the system.  This is a light touch process that we use
 to eliminate obvious spam and some bad practice (e.g. kind but unnecessarily repeated messages to thank the original poster, misdirected requests to be removed from the list, and some obviously irrelevant posts…).  We do not filter more heavily than that and I
 would not be in favour of blocking posts from certain organisations whatever their reputation among some of our community.<br>
 <br>
We encourage discussion and the sharing of views on this list.  We encourage organisations and projects other than CODATA to use the list to reach this community and to publicise their activities where relevant and of interest.  It is important to reiterate,
 however, that the appearance of the third party post on this list does not necessary imply endorsement by CODATA.<br>
 <br>
With very best wishes,<br>
 <br>
Simon.<u></u><u></u></div>
