<div class="">A further issue is that there are far far too many journals, so adding another (even if free) is problematic.</div>

<div class="">A great deal of the drivers for paying is now coming from China - here specific (and expensive) journals are</div>

<div class="">seen as prestigious and papers are submitted there irrespective of their suitability. That drives a business</div>

<div class="">That said, at least the journals hosted by the American or European Geophysical Unions are not for</div>

 APCs for - say - 10% of all articles at the publisher's expense for those authors who - or whose institution - cannot pay. (Surely, editors would arrive at similar criteria as enumerated below). As founder and now member of the advisory board of ESSD, one

 of the first (the first?) data journals in the domain, I am proud to say that ESSD's (semi-)commercial publisher Copernicus has been waiving *all* APCs for this journal for more than 10 years now.<o:p class=""></o:p></p>

<p class="">What I want to stress is that, as we discuss diverse publishing, educational, infrastructural and other initiatives in the area of research data we will encounter many operational and funding models, many of which will in some way involve commercial

 partners, while others may be fully government-operated (whether directly or through institutes such as below). Neither of both models should be rejected as anathema or hailed as salvation, outright.<o:p class=""></o:p></p>

<p class="">As I tried to demonstrate in the first full paragraph, we cannot avoid a certain measure of promotion, be it about an institute or a commercial partner, when discussing the merits of each approach. If an approach has a disadvantage - and perhaps

 and data paper pubilishing, repository and services; (2) the hard money of the publishing such as facilities support, basic salaries of the editorial office, are from the Institute, and the soft money (such as grant) are for supporting travel, part of salary

 of associates of editors, ans so on.</span><o:p class=""></o:p></p>

I would be reluctant to apply a ‘no platform’ policy and do not think that the analogy holds between a discussion list for data issues (albeit with 3000 subscribers) and the ‘GAFA' social media platforms in the way that Geoffrey suggests.  I would prefer to

 let subscribers decide whether the initiative advertised is ‘green-washing’ or ’SDG-washing’ or is something of interest.  In this instance, ’no-platforming’ such posts feels to me too much like blocking information to an informed community.<o:p class=""></o:p></div>

We, as members of the international science community, should be wary of supporting an initiative led by a company that has effectively privatised the results of much publicly-funded science and inhabited access to it by scientists and citizens. That this should

 happen in things as profoundly important as the SDGs is doubly worrying. CODATA should think carefully before acting as the technology companies do, by providing a platform for material for which they claim no responsibility.<o:p class=""></o:p></div>

The CODATA International list is moderated.  However, that simply means that someone from the CODATA Secretariat (generally Asha or myself) checks the post to filter out spam before allowing it through the system.  This is a light touch process that we use

 to eliminate obvious spam and some bad practice (e.g. kind but unnecessarily repeated messages to thank the original poster, misdirected requests to be removed from the list, and some obviously irrelevant posts…).  We do not filter more heavily than that and I

 would not be in favour of blocking posts from certain organisations whatever their reputation among some of our community.<br class="">

 <br class="">

We encourage discussion and the sharing of views on this list.  We encourage organisations and projects other than CODATA to use the list to reach this community and to publicise their activities where relevant and of interest.  It is important to reiterate,

 however, that the appearance of the third party post on this list does not necessary imply endorsement by CODATA.<br class="">

Five years ago, the UN General Assembly set forth 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) designed to pave the path to a more sustainable future. The goals are measured against various targets and indicators to be achieved by 2030. To make the best decision

 on which research to fund, program evaluators must have a clear view of the landscape of research supporting the SDGs. This understanding can reveal gaps requiring additional funding and support.<o:p class=""></o:p></div>

 is to create an open knowledge base to help identify which research supports which SDG. The aggregated crowdsourced set of article identifiers matched to SDG’s will be made available through Elsevier’s ICSR Lab, to support the scholarly community.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><o:p class=""></o:p></div>
