What we can do now for protecting the people, their life, fundamental human right and human security is to use this scientist network as much as possible to make the nations to stop the war.
Each scientist has his/her personal network to work together for the world.
I myself have been talking with scientists and intellectuals on this issue as one activity.
If over ten million academics in the world work together with the same purpose, we can make the change.
I hope it is not the pipe dream.

Yes.
Kostiantyn has sent very precise message, which is confirmed by Yuri right now:
Russia and these Russians supporting bullying regime (hard to believe, but there
are many of them!) must be suspended. These statement has to be exclaimed as
loud as possible.
Probably is not of great influence on the regime, but it could be a drop wearing
away the stoned consciousness of Russian general public.

I am Ukrainian working for many years at the University of Amsterdam, contributing to a range of research activities in Europe and wider.
But my family is in Ukraine in Kyiv and in the suburb, hiding every day and night in shelters. My son-in-law is defending Kyiv

Universities suspended education for two weeks but it may be extended, students and computer professionals are joining cyber-defence forces and activities.
Many universities, international academic communities are offering a place to relocate for research and study.
I want to express gratitude on behalf of my professional network in Ukraine to those initiatives and declarations of support. But from above, you may understand that this is not a priority at the moment.
Ukraine and Ukrainian research community needs active support from the international community to stop the war.
What can be done?
I fully support Kostyantyn Yefremov's email all is correct, and it is not possible to write about current situation in Ukraine in a few lines.
So, if somebody has read it till this point, I strongly advise you to read and re-read Kostyantyn's email closely.
1) First of all, I want to say that CODATA's statement is weak. It doesn't address the needs of the moment
It uses the words 'military operation' - Putin uses "special military operation". How much it different?
Even the UN GA statement puts these three words in quotation marks. UNGA statement uses "Aggression against Ukraine" - still better.
EC and many governments I checked, in particular NL, define this clearly as WAR/OORLOG.
CODATA must be clear on this.
2) You should know Putin's psychology, keeping silence, not acting is treated as weakness and submission.
3) What the CODATA's statement offers? For what actions does it call?
In particular, the statement says "The Officers, Executive Committee and Secretariat of CODATA are united in their wish for a peaceful resolution".
What peaceful resolution can be in this case? Can you say this to Ukrainian researchers and students who are risking their life in defending Ukrainian cities and Kyiv in particular?
CODATA mission and recognition is worth more clear position and statement.
4) Yes, russian community is suppressed by Putin's dictatorship regime and quickly moving to stalin or north korean model now.
But nobody can change this regime if the Russian people will not do. Their silence exactly created Putin.
Nobody wants to expel Russians from CODATA or any other international research activities.
But we, the international research community, need to call a conscious Russian research community in Russia to do everything of their capability to stop the war.
It is not a secret that many scientists, academicians and cultural figures support Putin: they supported the annexation of Crimea in 2014, and they support Putin now. I myself know few people of that sort.
So, we need to distinguish these two categories in Russia and send encouragement and motivation to one group and condemnation to another group.
5) The statement says "Ukraine and Russia are both members"
I want just to express the firm opinion of all Ukrainian people: words and country names "Ukraine" and "Russia" will nether stand next to each other.
Respect Ukrainian people!
6) I fully support Konstyantyn's suggestion to temporarily suspend Russian membership in CODATA, and ban Russian organisations from international funded projects participation.
This should not limit or restrict individual researchers to participate and contribute.
This is done by many international cultural, sport organisations.
This is a moral duty of CODATA as well.

I hope that at least somebody will read this email and become inspired to act.
Remember remote and close history that silence created many evils in our history. Saying and wearing badges "Never again" must be supported by actions.

I'm afraid that you do not quite accurately imagine the scale of what is happening in Ukraine. Russia is waging a full-scale war on the Ukrainian territory. The Russian army has invaded along the entire length of the border between Ukraine and Russia, and is also attacking from the territory of the Republic of Belarus (the total length of the border is about 3,000 km).
The Russian army uses aviation, rocket artillery, vacuum and cluster bombs. The Russian army cannot achieve superiority over the Ukrainian military and launches rocket and bomb attacks on civilian targets, killing and injuring civilians. Entire residential areas of a number of large Ukrainian cities were destroyed, including Kharkov, Sumy, Chernihiv. Constantly carried out rocket attacks on the capital of Ukraine, the city of Kyiv. Many small towns were affected. Tonight, as I am writing this letter, Russian troops are shelling the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, from tanks, and a fire has already started on the territory of the plant.
The tragedy of this war has already affected every family in Ukraine. Putin declared denazification as one of the goals of the war, which implies the destruction of Ukrainian culture, traditions and their bearers - i.e. genocide.

We are very grateful to the international community for their help. Thanks to the international support of partners from all over the world, the armed forces of Ukraine are now holding back the onslaught of one of the strongest armies in the world. We understand that Putin will not stop to the conquest of Ukraine. In future plans - to unite under the auspices of Russia all the countries of the Warsaw Pact, which threatens to destroy the fragile balance of global security.
Therefore, it is now extremely important for all progressive forces to unite and repulse the aggressor in all possible directions. Tough times call for tough decisions. We encourage the international scientific community to express their support for Ukraine not only in words but also in deeds. In addition to the sanctions imposed by your countries, we ask you to initiate the termination of all forms of cooperation with Russian scientific organizations (including the consideration of applications for new projects, the termination of funding for existing projects, the temporary exclusion/restriction of participation in the international scientific councils and unions, and etc.).
We also urge you to temporarily suspend Russia's membership in CODATA.
We have many great colleagues in Russia, we know them personally, we know that many of them do not support the government's actions to attack Ukraine. But now we are not talking about individuals. The proposed restrictions should concern institutions. It so happened that Russian scientific and educational institutions are one of the pillars of the current regime in Russia. Therefore, it is extremely important to send a strong signal to such organizations through the introduction of restrictions.

As the Committee on Data of the ISC, we call for the respect for
international humanitarian law, and the preservation of
scientific institutions and their valuable data resources. Most
of all, we demand that the safety and well-being of our fellow
scientists, data experts and colleagues be maintained.
Ukraine and Russia are both members of CODATA, and we work
closely with many dear colleagues and friends at scientific and
data institutes in both countries. Kyiv, now under attack, hosted
the 2008 CODATA Conference and is the location of our partner
organisations, the World Data Centre for Geoinformatics and

Many colleagues from these institutes, colleagues who have
attended CODATA conferences and workshops, and young scientist
alumni of our training activities, remain in Kyiv and are in
danger. These women and men are our scientific colleagues, our
partners in advancing the science of data and our friends in

lie in the bold and determined actions of scientists reaching
across the Cold War divides in the great data gathering exercises
of the International Geophysical Year of 1958, and subsequent
concerted efforts to gather fundamental reference data in a host
of research domains. We will continue to work in this spirit with
all our colleagues. As stated by ISC we are “committed to
continue advancing the equal participation and collaboration
between scientists in all countries in its activities and the
principle of the free and responsible practice of science which
is enshrined in its statutes
