[CODATA-international] EXTERNAL: Re: CODATA Statement on the War in Ukraine

Dear Jean-Claude + Ahmed,

as a white South African who grew up under apartheid I agree with Ahmed. 
The cultural boycott was effective and made many white South Africans 
think and react to the impact of apartheid. There were not enough of us 
white South Africans who did thus but it definitely contributed to 
isolate South Africa + South Africans and accelerate the end of apartheid.

I think sanctions against a country have a strong role to play while at 
the same time we need to distinguish between individuals and their 
government. We cannot say individuals=governments otherwise we would 
have to change our opinions of people based on the change of 
governments. Individuals (especially if they are many) can and do 
influence governments which is why sanctions help.
