We are into the last few days of SciDataCon 2021: only three days left,
don’t miss out!

On Tuesday 26 October, there will be three strands. This includes the
final session in our exploration of components of Core Interoperability,
looking at interoperability for cross-domain science
<https://www.scidatacon.org/virtual-2021/sessions/370/>. We also see the
first sessions in the strands on Supporting FAIR Research
<https://codata.org/supporting-fair-research-virtual-scidatacon-2021-strand/>,
showcasing
two important European Research Infrastructures, and the suite of sessions
exploring new directions for CODATA and WDS activities

.
*Exploring Core Interoperability*

*DDI-CDI: The Challenge of Cross-Domain Data Integration

This panel examines the development and use of the Data Documentation
Initiative’s Cross-Domain Integration (DDI-CDI) specification. DDI-CDI
provides a model for the enhanced metadata and documentation needed when
integrating data which comes from different domains, characterized by
diverse structures and provenance. This is a double session. The first part
will focus on the capabilities of DDI-CDI and how it complements other
metadata standards for meeting the breadth of requirements in a
cross-domain scenario. The second part will look at specific
implementations and the challenges of adoption and support of standards
used in data sharing between domains. The focus of this part is to
illustrate in a real sense the challenges to be met, and to look at the
solutions which suggest themselves based on experience.
*Supporting FAIR Research*

*SoBigData: An European Research Infrastructure for Big Data and Social
Mining <https://www.scidatacon.org/virtual-2021/sessions/292/>, Tuesday 26

Data science is an opportunity for boosting social progress, and data
analysis tools are triggering new services with a clear impact on our daily
life. SoBigData RI (http://www.sobigdata.eu/) is a multi-disciplinary
research infrastructure aimed at using social mining and big data to
understand the complexity of our contemporary,
globally-interconnected society. The SoBigdata RI’s service platform
empowers researchers for the design and execution of large-scale social
mining experiments. Pushing the FAIR (findable, accessible, Interoperable,
responsible) and FACT (Fair, Accountable, Confidential and Transparent)
principles, the RI renders social mining experiments more efficiently
designed, and repeatable by leveraging concrete tools that operationalize
ethics, incorporating values and norms for privacy, fairness, transparency
and pluralism; also touching upon how data science helps us to make more
informed choices, underlining the need to achieve collective intelligence
without compromising the rights of individuals. The format of the session
is a mix of research and practice presentations where the SoBigData++
project is presented in all its parts.

*Unlock scientific collaboration through technology

This 90min practice session will showcase with real examples how the
Science Mesh (explained below) is supporting collaboration of distributed
science teams across disciplines dealing with data. The session will have
presentations from Science Mesh developers and also representatives of each
one of the use-cases. There will be opportunity for interaction and
discussion with audience. The Science Mesh
<https://cs3mesh4eosc.eu/science-mesh>, a service developed by CS3MESH4EOSC
project, enables the users to retain control over their remote or domestic
datasets, while becoming FAIR
<https://cs3mesh4eosc.eu/contribution-eosc-fair>(Findable, Accessible,
Interoperable and Reusable)compatible and integrated with the EOSC
<https://cs3mesh4eosc.eu/contribution-eosc-fair> (European Open Science
Cloud) at the same time. Users are able to directly access the service
provided by Science Mesh from easy-to-use interfaces and discover the
different functionalities, as well as develop application plugins or easily
set-up federations in their own scope and develop their own activities on
top of them. The Science Mesh goes beyond the general-purpose storage
services from multinational companies, by providing an interconnected
platform suited to the particular needs of researchers and students at
European academic institutions and increasing scientific knowledge coming
from both the academia and the research industry.

*CODATA and WDS Strategic Sessions*

*Open-Science addressing Collaboration of CODATA and WDS Communities in
Asia-Oceania Area <https://www.scidatacon.org/virtual-2021/sessions/321/>,

In the Asia-Oceania area, various activities on data have been performed
mainly by WDS and CODATA because this area is highly important in terms of
global aspects of environmental and socio-economic issues. On the other
hand, the construction of a collaborative network on data under the WDS and
the CODATA is still in an under-development stage. Many current CODATA Task
Groups (e.g. agriculture data, disaster data, data preservation, improving
data access) have a close connection with regional activities. Since
the principal members of WDS are research-data repositories mainly operated
by academic institutions, e.g. universities, the principal subjects of its
activity have been weighted to bottom-up and reinforce collaborative
infrastructure in the Asia-Oceania area. A collaboration of WDS and CODATA
will be particularly important to expand our activity to involve both
academic and social communities to establish a collaborative network on
data under the Open-Science and FAIR principles. The session will consist
of several ignition/lightning talks and structured discussion to initiate
collaborative actions of CODATA and WDS on data issue in the Asia-Oceania
area.

*Research Data and FAIR Data Framework in the Context of India’s STIP2021:
The Way Forward <https://www.scidatacon.org/virtual-2021/sessions/307/>,

In India, a draft version of the 5th national Science Technology and
Innovation Policy (STIP) was released in January 2021 for public
consultation. This policy instrument includes the provision of open
research data from the public-funded research and education. Additionally,
UNESCO released the draft version of the UNESCO Recommendation on
Open Science, to be adopted by the Member States in November 2021. As a
member country, India is also a party to the UNESCO Recommendation on Open
Science and will have to implement the set of recommendations therein. In
this context, the current session will explore the challenges and
opportunities in implementing the Research Data and FAIR Data Framework in
the country. The panelists will look into the open research data aspects at
the institutional, funders’, and national level in order to meet the
national and international norms and obligations in collaborative research.

*International data issues perspectives from the CODATA National Committees
– Stories from various countries and how they relate to international
issues and the CODATA Decadal Programme

CODATA is the Committee on Data of the International Science Council (ISC).
CODATA exists to promote global collaboration to improve the availability
and usability of data for all areas of research. Its mission is to connect
data and people to advance science and improve our world. It draws its
membership from a network of 18 member countries, 32 international science
unions and 4 institutional organizations. CODATA National Members meet in a
monthly forum to facilitate the sharing of experiences and information
among countries, to discuss updates from CODATA (International) and
to identify opportunities for members to participate with each locally or
globally. This session will feature short presentations by several
countries to demonstrate the diversity and the richness of
national activities as well as some of the challenges faced by individual
countries, and highlight the state of play of scientific data among
countries and how the priorities and approaches vary widely from country to
country. Each presenter will also discuss how their national activities
feed into and/or support the work and objectives of international
activities such as those of CODATA and the Decadal Program.
