The first webinar as part of the Research Data Alliance Interest Group for Agricultural Data (IGAD)<https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/agriculture-data-interest-group-igad.html>’s new Coffee Break initiative is set to take place on 16 June from 13:00 to 13:30 CEST. The webinar, titled Aligning AGROVOC and Ontologies to connect semantics to improve Agrifood data annotation and interoperability will feature Pier Luigi Buttigieg, Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration<https://helmholtz-metadaten.de/en> / GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research<https://www.geomar.de/en/>.

This webinar will dive deeper into AGROVOC<http://www.fao.org/agrovoc/>, a popular multilingual thesaurus with wide coverage in food and agriculture, mainly used in metadata of publications stored in repositories and databases; and quality ontologies, providing richer semantic relationships, used to annotate data at a granular level. These resources share similar concepts but also provide domain-specific terms.

In this context, would it be a good practice to semantically connect AGROVOC with complementary ontologies? Pier Luigi Buttigieg will share his opinion and present possible technical solutions for linking AGROVOC with ontologies, starting with the Agronomy Ontology.

Registration is now open. Interested participants can register for the webinar here<https://fao.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0pdu-rrT0jGtVfFgW6j4Zp_OI4990FaYH4>.

Speaker

Pier Luigi Buttigieg is a Digital Knowledge Steward and Senior Data Scientist working in the Earth and Environment branch of the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration<https://helmholtz-metadaten.de/en>. Pier researches and develops advanced, operational-grade, and internationally adopted knowledge representation (KR) technologies for ecology, planetary science, and Sustainable Development. He applies these solutions in mobilising and analysing complex and high-dimensional data sets, while leading community efforts to enhance global interoperability, particularly in the marine life sciences. Pier’s goal is to use data science to better bridge scientific data, information, and knowledge with operations, applications, policy, and society.

More about the IGAD Coffee Break

The new IGAD Coffee Break webinar series, which will feature eight different webinars from eight different presenters running from 16 June to 20 October 2021. The innovative initiative will help to create an ongoing dialogue and encourage the exchange of experiences on agricultural research and innovation within the IGAD community and beyond.

Every webinar in the IGAD Coffee Break series will last 30 minutes, with the structure of a 15-minute presentation, followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Through this format, participants of each webinar will have the opportunity to ask important questions and support the need for networking, to ensure that these meaningful conversations extend beyond the webinar series. Every session will also be recorded for those who cannot attend.
