[CODATA-international] INFORMED DECISIONMAKING RE: Data Together COVID-19 Appeal and Actions

Dear Falk,

thank you for raising this issue - I definitely echo the need for cultural
change (especially within the medical community)!

That being said, I have a more optimistic view, as I believe that there are
also positive steps towards this direction (at least as I perceive them
through my probably naive and definitely EU-biased lenses). Major
e-infrastructures and initiatives, such as ELIXIR
<https://elixir-europe.org/> and RDA <https://www.rd-alliance.org/> are
working towards making medical data more accessible (and FAIR), with
various Tasks and Groups tackling a particular issue at the time.

This is even more evident in the current circumstances, where both
ELIXIR (ELIXIR
support for SARS-CoV-2 research
<https://elixir-europe.org/covid-19-resources>), RDA (RDA-COVID19 Working
Group <https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/rda-covid19>) and EU (statement
<https://edps.europa.eu/sites/edp/files/publication/20-03-25_edps_comments_concerning_covid-19_monitoring_of_spread_en.pdf>
of the European Data Protection Supervisor on March 25th regarding this
subject), to mention a few of the "majors", started the efforts towards
making COVID-19 related data open, accessible and (wherever possible)
connected to entire analysis workflows (see Galaxy SARS-CoV-2 projerct
<https://github.com/galaxyproject/SARS-CoV-2>as well). Small step (maybe),
but definitely in the right direction.

Kind regards,

Fotis E. Psomopoulos

PS: Regarding SARS-CoV-2, I'd definitely point you towards the Resources
page <https://github.com/virtual-biohackathons/covid-19-bh20/wiki/Resources>
of the upcoming COVID-19 BioHackathon
<https://github.com/virtual-biohackathons/covid-19-bh20/wiki> (to take
place virtually next week, 5-11 April 2020)
