Dear CODATA,

best greetings.

We discussed here earlier some of the problem cases of data sharing,
specifically with UN level bodies and NGOs globally.

So for an example,
I simply ask you to try this one for the IUCN (bottom tweet and URL next
line):

https://www.iucn.org/resources/conservation-tools/world-database-of-key-biodiversity-areas

These are public areas anyways and based on compiled public GBIF data etc
information.

If you go through those steps and actually want to see the data,
take many hoops, including a personal review, robot clicks, and a delay time
of 2-5 working days (!). Needless to say, those data are technically
very problematic for content, bias and GIS formats and metadata etc.
It's not possible for people to use R for it etc.

That's not Open Access data sharing, as it can be done and is done
elsewhere, or any such leadership,
nor does it deal with a valid conservation (in case that's the aim here)..

Let's point out that BirdLife International NGO runs it, and which is based
in UK, has various royal support and receives money from 'big industrial
funders' etc.

A good source to know re fundings might be this one, besides others:
https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=SourceWatch

Here for BirdLife International link accordingly
https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=BirdLife_International

For a comparison, here the US one for The Audubon Society linking with
Elsevier etc etc
https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=National_Audubon_Society

This is public information.

Thanks, very best
